I am a research scientist in the Department of Geological Sciences specializing in laser ablation and quadrupole ICP-MS. My principal research interests lie in the fields of global change and sedimentary geochemistry as applied to modern and ancient depositional settings, and include chronostratigraphy, carbonate geochemistry, and paleoceanography. I am particularly interested in organic-rich sequences in space and time, and the impact of life processes (including anthropogenic effects) on the stratigraphic record. I utilize geochemical, isotopic, and GIS techniques, in addition to good old-fashioned field geology and petrography.

Projects of active and ongoing interest include: (1) Evaluating Neoproterozoic climate change (in Northern Ethiopia, Middle East) and its relationship to the Snowball Earth Hypothesis; (2) Discerning controls of REE distributions in organic carbon rich depositional systems; (3) Deciphering controls of microbial dolomite occurrence in organic rich depositional settings; (4) Determination of high-resolution chemostratigraphies in environmentally sensitive growth-banded sedimentary records (speleothems, microbialites, cements, cap carbonates); (5) Use of C, O, S, & Sr isotopic tracers in defining natural solute origins in the Red

Monday morning, November 14, Dr. Allen Coles, Richland One superintendent sent the following email announcement to his staff:

“I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Nathaniel Miller to superintendent of the Marion Two School District in Mullins, SC. Dr. Miller has worked as an Area Superintendent for Richland One for 5 years, and will begin his position in Marion Two on January 1. We wish him well in his new venture.”

Miller is the second of former Superintendent Dr. Ron Epps’ protegés to leave since Coles arrived. Miller had worked with Epps in a Chicago suburban district. Helen Jones replaced Sello as acting area superintendent last July. Dr. Diane James is the district’s third area superintendent.

Dr. Ron Epps resigned in January, 2005, soon after he was found not guilty of gross negligence when his protegé Area Superintendent Jake Sello was found guilty of defamatory and slanderous allegations against Dr. Ted Wachter, principal of Rosewood Elementary School. After resigning, Epps took a position as superintendent in residence with the Stupski Foundation based in Mill Valley, CA.
