  • Peter Minshall is an artist, designer, artistic director and masman who is renowned for his works of mas for Trinidad carnival and large-scale spectacle events and performances. Much of Minshall’s success came as a result of his investigation into the kinetics of the human body in motion and the development of structural techniques to amplify the energy of the masplayer’s performance. This has resulted in an array of innovations that continue to have a substantial impact in the Trinidad carnival and in spectacle performance internationally.

    Peter Minshall was born in Guyana on 16th July, 1941, and grew up in Trinidad. He attended Queen’s Royal College where he became heavily involved with the school’s theatre productions and did designing for the Trinidad Light Opera. After high school, he trained in theatre design at the Central School of Art and Design in London, England. He was one of the first to design costumes for the Notting Hill Carnival in London.

    As he studied design and was exposed to the world of art and theatre in London, Minshall gradually came to appreciate the value and potency of mas as a form of creative expression.     Early Life

    Peter Minshall  was born 16th July,1941 in Gerogetown ,Guyana and moved to Trinidad at the age of twelve. Although a Guyanese born he is  considered a son of the soil in Trinidad and Tobago. He attended Queens Royal College and then pursued theater design at Central School of Art and Design in London ,England.

    In 1976 he designed ‘Paradise Lost’ for Stephen Lee Heung which won Band of the Year title and in 1978 he started his own company ,The Callaloo Company. One of his earliest innovations were the bird and butterfly wings to give the costume movement. In addition, Minshall introduced the use of backpacks to eliminate the use of wheels. This way the masquerader could dance the costume and move with ease .He designed the famous Saga Boy and Tan Tan, which were sixteen foot tall dancing  puppets. His costumes and presentation always sent a message. In 1989 in his presentation Santimanitay sent the message of the vices that were the country’s society. Tapestry (1997) looked at the versatility of mankind. There was a mixture of traditional mas, European history and Hindu religion, giving his audience a reality check of cultural consciousness.
