OVERVIEW OF REGIMENT:
This regiment began as the 1st SC Volunteers (Gregg's), which mustered out on July 9, 1861 at Richmond, VA. At this time, the 1st SC Volunteers (Gregg's) comprised Companies A, B, C, E, H, I, K, L, M, N, and O. See the 1st SC Volunteers (Gregg's) for the known Field Officers.
President Jefferson Davis and the SC Convention of the People quickly authorized Col. Maxcy Gregg to re-organize this regiment, using the same arms, equipment, and regimental name and banner. Now, the regiment would be part of the Confederate States of America (CSA) military organization, and that President Davis would appoint the field officers. Many of the original men re-enlisted in the new regiment, however, many others chose to join the 15th SC Regiment (SCV) — and most insisted on returning home before re-enlisting at all.
On July 26th, the Edgefield Advertiser reported that Col. Maxcy Gregg's new regiment included six (6) companies from the old unit and four (4) new companies. By late August of 1861, his regiment included seven (7) companies who were either totally or mostly carryovers from the original regiment, and five (5) companies were completely new. Bio
Latimer Maxcy, much better known to the citrus world as “Latt,” was a prominent citrus figure who had a large impact on the citrus world throughout the early and mid-twentieth century. Centered in the Frostproof area, Latt Maxcy is widely known for bringing the first citrus groves to the area. This legend is actually historically inaccurate, but does not diminish the fact that Maxcy experienced unparalleled success in the region, making him one of central Florida’s most important citrus figures.
Maxcy was born on November 7, 1887 in Columbia, South Carolina. His family came to Florida in 1895, settling in the Mulberry area. At the age of nine, he began working as a water boy for the phosphate mines, earning 35 cents a day. While at the mines, he was exposed to heavy equipment, and he would later use this experience to his advantage.
