The Research Group Sovereignty and Social Contestation, Department of Cultural Anthropology, Utrecht University, invites paper proposals (Deadline: 30 Sept 2016) for an international conference on:

"Sovereignty, Contestation and ‘the Economy’", April 25-26, 2017

Please make sure to consult the attached PDF for the conference rationale and a detailed CfP.

We invite papers that combine insights from economic anthropology with critical perspectives from ethnography and political-economic approaches, providing original routes to examining the practices, representations and discourses of economic sovereignty as they are construed at diverse sites, where policies are met with subversion, appropriation, contestation, affirmation, and compliance.

Submissions should be sent to C.L.Kanters@uu.nl no later than September 30th, 2016. Please include a paper title, an abstract of 250-300 words, a short biography of 100-150 words as well as a clear indication as to which panel you would like to contribute to. Limited financial support will be available to cover accommodation costs for all accepted speakers. We therefore invite interested speakers to explore their own funding opportunities, especially for travel costs.

  • Biography: Weldon Kees (1914-1955?)

Weldon Kees, born in Beatrice, Nebraska, came to manhood during the Great Depression and joined the Communist Party as a Trotskyite. At the age of sixteen, he published his first story. After graduating from the University of Nebraska in 1935, Kees worked as an editor, librarian, painter, jazz pianist, composer, accomplished photographer, experimental filmmaker, and journalist, writing for Time, The New Yorker, and the Nation. His abstract, expressionist paintings were, at one time, exhibited alongside the works of Willem de Kooning and Hans Hofmann. On a summer day in 1955, Kees' automobile was discovered near the Golden Gate Bridge. His body, however, was never found.

Kees published his first poem when he was 23. His early work is heavily indebted to Auden, while it is Kees' later work, particularly the 'Robinson' poems, a series of four urbane lyrics, for which he is best known. In his preface to Kees' Collected Poems, Donald Justice writes, "Kees is one of the bitterest poets in history. Yet he appears to accept whatever is, however terrifying or ridiculous it may seem, with the serenity of a saint. The wall cracks; the stain spreads; he does not budge from his chair. This calm in the face of a certain doom [is] the most characterist
