  • USING PICTUREBOOK BIOGRAPHIES TO SUPPORT ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS

    I was born and raised in Isfahan, Iran. Like other children, I learned to speak Farsi, my native language, mostly at home. Unlike many children, I learned English from my father who attended university in the United States and was fluent in English. However, I also learned English by watching television and movies, as well as reading children’s picturebooks, all in English.

    T his recollection on learning Farsi as a first language and English as a second language is from a doctoral student in Curriculum and Instruction at a major university in the United States. T his student shared the recollection with me because I conduct research on the use of picturebooks to teach reading and am the director of her doctoral dissertation. Later, I reflected on this recollection. I was not surprised at the role picturebooks played in her learning a second language, but I was intrigued. In fact, it inspired this article.
